Starter locs, also known as 'baby locs', are the beginning phase of locking your hair. This stage can last anywhere from 3-6 months depending on how fast your hair grows and the hair texture.

Interlocking is often used to start new locs. Loose hair is repeatedly interlocked from ends to roots using one of the tools mentioned above. Depending on your hair type, condition, and density, it could take a couple of hours to interlock all of your hair.

Instant Locs are created by using a very small crochet hook to knot up a series of very tiny knots of hair that ultimately form a unified dreadlock. Also known as the Dreadlock Crochet Method.

Sisterlocks are more intricate to start than microlocs. They are made by parting the hair in a specific grid then locked using an interlocking tool. For microlocs, a coil, twist or braid is formed then a product  is applied while hand rolling to facilitate locking.
